Poker Rules
On this page we cover standard poker rules.
There are many variations of poker and the rules for each game may vary.
Each variation however is based on a standard set of rules and guidelines and we recommend that you get to know the basic rules of poker first, before getting into more complex rules of each additional game.
We describe basic fundamentals of poker below in a manner that is easy to remember and quick to catch on.
As you are reading through you will quickly find out that there is more to poker than just this page so if you are just a beginner be sure to browse through the rest of our website where you can gain a lot of valuable information on how to play successful poker.
Poker is played with a single 52 deck of cards.
The ranking of individual cards, from highest to lowest goes as follows:
Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
Ace may also be the lowest card in some poker variations often called lowball or low poker but it is usually the highest card in the most popular poker games played.
There are four suits in a deck of cards: hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds.
All suits are equal and there is no ranking between them.
A standard poker hand consists of five cards.
Any hand of a higher rank beats any hand of a lower rank.
For example, any Royal Flush beats any Full House.
Between hands in the same category it is the higher rank of individual card that decides which hand is better.
In the case of a tie, the pot is split equally among the winning hands.
Poker hand ranking from the highest to the lowest goes as follows:
Five of a Kind, Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, Pair, High Card.

Poker can also be played using wild cards, depending on the game variation.
A wild card which is often a Joker or any other card designated as wild can be used to substitute any card the card holder wishes to replace.
A wild card can also be used to duplicate any card already held by a player.
Card duplication is not necessary except to create a Five of a Kind, which is five cards of the same rank.
Although wild cards are rarely used in a real casino poker game, they are a popular way to add excitement to a home game.

Poker is not a solitaire.
Any number of players from two to fourteen may play in a single Poker game, depending on what form of the game is selected. In general, Texas Hold'em features nine or ten players and 7 Card Stud features seven or eight.
The number of cards dealt in a poker game depends on the type of game played.
In a standard poker game five cards are dealt to each player face down.
But there are other poker variations where the amount of cards dealt may be different. In 7 Card Stud for example, seven cards are dealt to each player.
Only five of those cards will create a poker hand though.
Poker Betting
Poker betting can vary depending on which game variation you're playing.
In a standard poker game betting begins with a forced bet called an ante in which each player puts an equal amount of money into the pot before the cards are dealt.
But in other poker variations like Texas Hold'em for example only two people are forced to bet and the bets are called blinds.
Poker requires cash or chips.
The bets are placed in the center of the table creating what is called the pot.
Players do not put their money directly into the pot.
Instead players place their bets directly in front of them.
Once the dealer has verified that all players' bets are correct, he or she will put the money into the pot.
Tossing chips into the pot is rude. Such action is called "splashing the pot".
When betting gets under way and bets are placed on the table players have the following options:
Bet: Game starts when the first person to open the betting places an amount of chips in the pot.
The rest of the players will now have to either call or raise the original bet in order to remain in the game
Fold: If there has been a bet, a player can drop out of the hand by folding. Player can fold anytime action reaches him/her. If player decides to fold he/she has no chance of winning the pot and looses all money he/she has placed in the pot.
Call: If a bet has been made, each player wishing to participate in the hand and have a chance of winning the pot has to put in an equal amount.
Check: Player does not place any money in the pot, but his hand is still eligible.
Betting round ends with no additional money being added into the pot if all players decide to check. Player is not allowed to check if another player has made a bet.
Raise: Any player may call the previous bet and raise betting to a new amount. All other players wishing to remain in the hand including the original better will now have to call. If there is a second raise in a betting round such a raise is called re-raise and the third raise is called re-re-raise.
Poker hand round ends with a player with a highest winning hand collecting money from the pot.
So those are the basic rules for poker games in a nutshell.
The most popular poker game variation played in the United States and all over the World is without a doubt Texas Hold'em followed by Omaha and 7 Card Stud.
You can find those 3 poker games in every land based Casino and online poker room.
Thanks for visiting this page and good luck with your future poker game.
