The World Poker Tour has been captivating millions of television viewers since its first television broadcast in 2003.
The set of Texas Hold'em tournaments held in different locations in the United States, internationally and on board of cruise ships, the World Poker Tour features the world's best professional poker players.

Sponsored by casinos and online poker rooms, the World Poker Tour created a significant boom in poker play around the world attracting crowds of players to land based and online poker tables.

Stephen Lipscomb, attorney, television producer and now the CEO of WPT Enterprises firm, which controls the World Poker Tour, is the mastermind behind the tour. His goal was to take poker to the next level and turn it into a vigorous television sport. With that in mind he developed his initial business plan in September of 2001.

World Poker Tour made its debut in the later part of 2002 and early 2003.The first season concluded in April of 2003 with the WPT Championship held at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas.

Convinced of the show's success, Travel Channel ordered the entire first season containing 13 two-hour episodes without even a preview and began airing it on American cable television in the spring of 2003. The show did indeed gain an instant popularity with 350, 000 households on average tuning in to watch during the initial stages of broadcast. This number rose to 1.2 million households per episode during that first season. On February 1st 2004, World Poker Tour debuted on the NBC network with a special “Battle of Champions” tournament, which aired against Super Bowl XXXVIII pre-game show on CBS.

Former playmate Shana Hiatt was the host and the sideline reporter of the tour for the first three seasons. Courtney Friel, former newscaster replaced Hiatt in the forth 2005-2006 season. The show is co hosted by World Series of Poker winner Mike Sexton and actor Vince Van Patten.

The ability to see the players hole cards through a small camera placed on the table in front of them is very appealing to viewers. The big success of the World Poker Tour and its growing audience prompted the creation of more shows like it, such as “The Hollywood Home Game” featuring celebrities playing for charity and “Ladies Night” where six of the top female players compete against each other.

In 2004, the World Poker Tour created a Walk of Fame.
It was designed to honor players who played the game well at the highest levels as well as those who celebrated poker through film, television and literature or made it appealing to the new generation of fans. Players included into the Walk of Fame have a tile featuring their handprints as well as the depiction of their most famous poker hand placed in front of the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, California. Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen and James Garner were inaugurated to the Walk of Fame in 2004.

World Poker Tour can be entered through a buy-in fee, which could be anywhere from $5, 000 to 25, 000 dollars, depending on the tournament. Players are given an equal amount of chips to start. Each tournament is played over the course of a few days lasting until one player acquired all of the chips. The winner receives the grand prize, which is approximately 30-35 % of the total prize pool and can exceed 1 million dollars. The 2nd price of approximately 20% of the prize pool and is awarded to the player who was the last to loose all his chips. The rest of the prize pool money is divided between the rest of the players who participated in the tournament and the amount depends on the order in which the player left the tournament.

Anyone can enter the World Poker Tour tournament. You too can compete against top poker players like Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson or Daniel Negreanu.
A buy-in entry fee is all that is required.
